What Does it Mean to Have a Rectangle Body Shape?

It means your shape looks athletic with bust and hips of approximately the same width. You have little or no waist defintion. Your waist measures from 1" to 8" smaller than the bust.

If you were to gain weight, the pounds would distribute evenly throughout your frame. It's also a common body figure type as women age, give birth or gain weight.

You Have a Straight Figure

Because of your wide waist you might appear heavier on top than you really are and even if your stomach is flat.

But one of the positive thing on being a rectangle shape is that you gain weight everywhere and lose it everywhere!

How to Dress Your Rectangle Body Shape

With this shape you might look shorter and/or heavier than you really are.

So your main goal should be to create a waist on your figure and add more width to your upper and lower part -- tranforming your body into a proportionate hourglass shape.

Check out below for tips on how to create subtle curves on your frame.

    Golden apple

    Create a defined waist

You can either wear a dark colored wide belt around your waist or place a waist cinching shapewear underneath your clothes.

Golden apple Add dimensions to your frame

This means "breaking up" your silhouette to create curves. Take a look at Hilary Duff's outfit on your left - she's wearing a floral blouse with wide belt.

Cameron Diaz keeps her outfit balanced yet dimensional with horizontal striped sweater and cool eyecatching black ankle boots.

Mini notebook icon Tip: If you prefer something simple a tailored turtleneck sweater dress (just like what Hilary Duff's wearing to your right), make sure you add a wide belt around your waist to create waist definition. Wearing something tailored alone without any waist-hugging details will only enhance your rectangle body shape.

Golden apple Accentuate your best features!

Emphasize a pair of lean legs, toned shoulders, etc. Make the best out of your body shape! Find more tricks on how to do this, here.

Here you can see that Nicole Kidman makes the most of her height by highlighting her lean frame with a vintagey cream colored dress. She also has toned shoulders which she emphasizes with the halter-style dress. To create a waist she added a black belt around the waist.

Mini notebook icon Tip: I wouldn't recommend skinny belts as they can make your mid-section look a bit heavier. If you must wear one, choose the thickest skinny belt!

Golden apple Dress your vertical body shape and height

You also need to consider your vertical body shape (are you short legged-long waisted? Or long legged-short legged?) as well as your height. If you're petite stick to slim and straight fitted bottoms and dresses, small prints (medium but vertical prints if you're a plus size) and preferably above or on the knee-length hemlines! If you're a plus size avoid dainty, small details and prints.

Best Clothes For Your Rectangle Body Shape

Fashion tip Low vertical necklines like U- and V-neck

because they break up your wide torso and elongate it.

Fashion tip Almost all types of pants

especially wide and flared leg because the flare hem which make it look like you have hips.

The beauty of having a rectangle body shape is your wide selection of pants and skirt.

Mini notebook icon Tip: If you're wearing skinny pants or jeans, make sure you balance your frame with bright colored shoes (like Cameron Diaz's silver flats on your right). This will avoid making you look stick-figured.

Fashion tip Tops, sweaters and dresses that cinch at your waistline or right below your bust

such as an empire waist because it makes your waist look narrower.

    Fashion tip Full skirts

such as circle, pleated and A-line styles.

Mini notebook icon Tip: High waist clothings usually make a waist look shorter and thicker. On the other hand, you can make it work for you by wearing a high waist skirt or pants in a dark, solid color like dark blue or black along with a sweater that matches the color of it. This help avoid breaking your midsection in two and widening it. You can also top it off with a black belt.

    Fashion tip Shoulder pads

help raise your frame by adding flattering width, sculpting your upper body.

Fashion tip Shirts and tops that have details around the bust area

such as ruffles, ruching, sequins and other embellishments.

Fashion tip Jackets and coats that flare out from the waist

Mini lightbulb Last Words

Did you find my fashion tips on how to dress your rectangle body shape useful? If not, do this:

Imagine an hourglass shape. Now in your head try to merge your rectangle figure with that shape. See the "excess" area around the waist and bust? That's your main focus -- trimming your torso to make your frame look proportional like an hourglass shape. You can do this by wearing something that cinchs at the thinnest part of your waist and slightly flares out at the top and bottom to create a little but of curves thus making your torso look slimmer.
