The ripped jeans trend is back from the 90s and are hotter than ever. These super-trendy destroyed jeans range in a variety of styles – from the sexy skinny leg to cool and casual boyfriend jeans with a cropped hem.
They’re awesome for adding a little bit of cool edge to your style. You can create chic outfits with distressed jeans by cross-mixing with other styles such as a feminine blouse (girly and tough), American Apparel tee (casual and basic), button down shirt (classy mix), plaid shirt (for a trendy look), and the list goes on.
How to Select the Right Destroyed Jeans
Fitted or baggy?
Skinny ripped jeans are definitely a hot choice for those who want to inject some sexy rock ‘n roll edge to their outfit. The con is that the slim fit along with the distressed effects of the pants can over-emphasize prominent butt, hips and thighs which not every woman is comfortable with. So make sure you don’t mind the extra highlighting of your curves.
The straight leg ripped boyfriend jeans serve a different vibe, with its slightly wide legs and baggy cut you’ll look effortlessly cool, as if you grabbed the jeans out from your boyfriend’s wardrobe. Very sexyyy.
The slightly baggy boyfriend look is definitely one of my favorite jeans styles because it looks so laid-back yet chic compared to tight skinnys. It doesn’t look too downtown if you pair the baggy ones with high heels. However, if your legs are short and/or you’re Petite (5’4″ or shorter) then these can be height suicide if you’re not careful. When in doubt – add a pair of heels to raise the length of your legs!
Determine your body figure and height
Determine your body shape and figure out if you’re bottom or top heavy.
Basically, if you want to slim down your butt, hips and thighs, straight leg boyfriend jeans will minimize this area. You might also want to select a simpler jeans style with minimal rips along with a solid denim wash.
If you have no problem showing off your figure (or you need to create curves on slim hips) – then slimmer legs such as straight and skinny jeans should be your option. Oh, and don’t forget the extra rips and shreds!
Check where the rip is located on the jeans
If you’re on the curvy side opt for simple distress and rips. To look leaner find jeans with vertical rips instead of horizontal which will only widen your body figure. However if you want curves then do the exact opposite.
The Right Ways To Wear Ripped Jeans: Modernize the Look
If you love the destroyed jeans look but aren’t sure if you could pull it off, I suggest you start with something simple, with just a few rips and tears (nothing drastic that will expose to much skin) and in a fit that doesn’t hug around your legs.
Now here are a couple of fashion tips on how to look great in ripped jeans:
Balance, balance, baaaaalaaaance
Also remember to balance out the look, so if the jeans have multiple or large rips you should keep the rest of your outfit simple to avoid over-cluttering your silhouette.
For example, balance the edgy look with a basic, solid colored tunic tee along with gladiator sandals or simple canvas sneakers.
You could go for a dressy top but then again, there should be minimal with rips on the jeans to let the top be the focal point of your outfit.
How to accessorize with the ripped jeans
To give your distressed jeans a more dressy and trendy look throw in bangle bracelet, high heels, necklace or a fedora hat. Make sure that they’re simple in color and design and that they don’t look too shabby with the rest of the outfit.
Best shoes with ripped jeans
High heel shoes can look good with ripped jeans but it depends on the style of the shoes. Stilettos, flashy pumps and boots with a pointy toe outdate the pants and make you look tacky. Instead go for trendy shoes with wider heels and/or platform. Open toe shoes softens the jeans – making it look more feminine and girly.
Other things to remember
Also, go easy and natural on the makeup and hair to avoid looking overdone. The best look with these type of jeans is often balanced, combined with classy and feminine pieces.
