How to Look Good in a Tank Top

Work with your upper body proportions

When buying womens tank tops, make sure to select the right strap size scaled to the width and shape of your shoulder-line.

If you have broad shoulders (see: Inverted Triangle Body Shape) I suggest wider straps instead of spaghetti straps because they won't make your shoulders look bigger in comparison. If you have narrow shoulders look for tank tops with slimmer straps, unless you want to make your shoulder-line smaller! :-)

How to select the right neckline

You might want to choose a neckline based on your bust size and body shape. Take a look at these basic guidelines:

Large bust

The neckline should end right at the top of your cleavage to avoid highlighting a big bust.

This is a general rule that applies to well-dressed occasions, not necessarily the activities you partake in after work ;-)

Keep in mind that if you have a large bust then it can take the attention away from your other assets and can make people take you less serious. So playing it down a bit can help people's focus.


Small bust

A small bust needs details (think ruching, pleats, ruffles, etc.) along the neckline to create an illusion of bigger breasts. It's not a must, but if you want more volume on top to draw the eye away from the hips then this trick solves that.

In general, this styling trick is for anyone who wants to fill out the chest area to help balance out a bottom-heavy body shape. Whether it be prominent thighs, legs or butt.


Slim upper body (narrow shoulders)

Create the illusion of a wider chest and shoulder-line by wearing a tank top with wide details, such as rounder or straighter necklines.

You might also want to experiment with horizontal prints (for example navy stripes), breasts pockets and womens tank tops in a light or bright color.



Wide upper body

Work on achieving a slimmer chest and torso with a V-neck or a low scoop-neck. Necklines like these (the low neck and V-shape draw the eye up and down) help make your upper body look longer and leaner.

You might also want to look for womens tank tops that are plain and simple (in a dark neutral color) without any eye-catching details (an exception is vertical prints and details).
