"How to Look Taller in a Skirt"

Petite Black Skirt

Black Skirt from Marks & Spencer

Stylish petite skirts can be hard to find. There's no doubt that petite women and gals with short legs have remarkably less fashion options than the rest of the bunch. However you can still buy standard skirts but you'll have to make sure that you can have it tailored.

But what if you don't want to go through the process of having it altered for almost every garment you'll buy? Well, you'll have to look for womens petite clothes designed to fit your figure and that isn't always an easy task. However I've done most of the work and added petite skirts that you might like.

Petite Clothing Advice: How to Look Taller in a Skirt

One the first things you should understand when it comes to petite clothing is that your body shape is another important factor in finding the right skirt. You might be a pear shape with wider hips and thighs than your shoulders, or the complete opposite, like an inverted triangle with wider than your hips. Basically, a pencil skirt can look widening on a woman with pear body shape and make her look shorter, compared to an inverted triangle with narrow hips who needs the extra 'plump' around her bottom half.

Also, the right hemline, details and legwear are 3 other vital points to have in mind when buying petite skirts. I've dedicated a whole page about picking the right skirt so I advise you to check that out first before you start shopping.

Mini notebook icon Choose skirts that hit at the knee or above. If it falls right on the widest part of your legs, the calves, you'll discover that the vertical line shortens your legs and especially draw attention to that area, making you look shorter and stubbier.

Mini notebook icon You can also wear long skirts but wear them long, all the way down to your feet (right below the ankle knuckle) but it shouldn't sweep the floor to avoid looking it is dragging you down. Also make sure a long skirt is fitted around your hips to prevent an unflattering boxy look.

Mini notebook icon Add a pair of high heels whenever possible. A knee high skirt with heels is a fabulous combo. They simple elongate your ankles and legs and make you appear taller. If you're not a heel-girl look for shoes with vertical straps (t-straps) and narrow toes.

Mini notebook icon Show more skin. One of the golden rules of dressing your petite frame is to show more skin. However if you're not comfortable with wearing a short skirt you can always pair it with matching black opaque tights or sheer stockings for a more covered yet stylish look.

Mini notebook icon Speaking of legwear, if you have short legs compared to your upper body, avoid strong contrasts around that area, like for example dark colored skirt with white/beige tights to avoid 'chopping' up your figure. The same rule applies to shoes and boots. Avoid light colored shoes with dark colored skirts.

Mini notebook icon Also, for variation go for colored and print skirts. If you want to wear flashy red skirt try to wear a top that doesn't create too much contrast between the two colors. Or at try finding a skirt with vertical details. They help draw the eye upwards and creates an elongating effect.
