5'1 and Wants to Look Taller

by Denisse
(NY)

Im about 5'1 slim and toned. Every time I get dressed I find ways to wear clothes that would make me look taller.

I love wearing heels so that's not an issue. My question is: Would wearing a short slim dress or long jeans make me look taller?

Any ideas?

Denisse,

a short slim dress will definitely make you look taller (and top it off with killer heels). Basically, showing more skin and legs make you appear leaner and longer. Also the comparison between your height and the short dress visually elongate your body frame.

Best jeans for your petite slim body figure
Long jeans also make you look longer but you have to make sure that the hem and fit are perfect for your legs, height and proportions (see: How to Buy Womens Jeans). For your body figure I suggest jeans that are straight/slim cut. And since you're petite, I recommend you to look for jeans that are fitted around the thighs.

Because you're short and toned, skinny (however the skinnys should be worn with heels)/straight and slim cut jeans will complement your figure, compared to a pair of flare or wide leg jeans that will swamp you up and make you look shorter. Although bootcut is a universal denim cut, it can look too much on your 5'1 slim body.

Be careful with contrasts
Alos, have in mind that wearing contrasting colors (ex. dark blue jeans and white top) will cut you in half and shorten your height. For your petite frame, a streamlined color combo will elongate your figure. For example, black jeans and navy blue top or sweater. However you can wear a white top with the dark colored jeans, but make sure you add a dark colored cardigan or jacket to "connect" with the dark bottom (jeans).

Or you can simply add details and accessories that make you appear taller, such as:

  • A long pendant necklace

  • Wear dark colors from top to toe, or go monochromatically by wearing colors in the same shade

  • High heels

  • Slightly pointy shoe toes

  • Anything vertically shaped or that stretches vertically

How Do I Dress My Petite Pear Body Shape?

(Colombia)

Petite (157cm) and Pear Shaped Jennifer Love-Hewitt/celebutopia

How do I dress my petite figure with wide legs and hips?

When I was little I used to be very thin, but as I grew, I got a little bit less thin, and so I'm really confused about what to wear, because I remain being little but I have wide legs and hips.

I would appreciate very much your help!

PS: You've got an amazing website, and I'm totally obsessed with it! It's an amazing guide!

Are saying that you're petite-thin or petite-short as in below 5'4 (163cm)? It sounds like your figure grew into a pear body shape. A pear shape is considered curvy with killer hips which many men find attractive (just look at Beyoncé and Shakira) :-)

Since you're expressing your concerns about your curves let me give you some basic tips on to how make them look slimmer (minimizing your hips can also help make you look visually taller):

Select wider hems

Wardrobe essentials for pear body shapes

Opt for A-line skirts and shorts (and dresses), straight leg, boot cut (classic), flare, wide leg and trendy boyfriend jeans. The wider hem balances your body by streamlining your figure so that your wide hips become less obvious.

I might also want to advise you to choose slim shaped wide leg pants because really big ones can drown your petite frame :/

Visually widen your upper body

Do you wear skinny jeans and/or pencil skirts? If you do, you might have discovered that these type of pants make your hips, thighs and legs wider, which automatically shorten your height.

You don't have to completely cut them off from your wardrobe - there are several ways to make slim and tapered hemlines to work for you body shape.

Examples are:
  • Wear a light (white, light gray) or bright colored (red, electric blue, anything that 'pops') top or sweater
  • Wear details and embellishments like a nice statement necklace or a pair of large earrings
  • Choose tops and sweaters that visually add more volume and width to your upper half (shoulders and bust), like for example scoop and boat necks, horizontal stripes, ruffles, shoulder pads, embellished shoulders, puffed sleeves, tube tops and dresses, heart neckline, etc.

Basically the trick is to balance out your body shape - fill and widen the parts that need it so that your wide hips appear less prominent. I call this the 'Enhance and Minimize' trick that improves your body proportions.

Some of the details mentioned (scoop necks, horizontal stripes) can shorten your height, so you need to counter the shortening effect by adding one or several of these details:

Details that visually lengthen:

  • A long pendant necklace

  • Wear dark colors from top to toe, or go monochromatically by wearing colors in the same shade

  • High heels

  • Slightly pointy shoe toes

  • Anything vertically shaped or that stretches vertically

Shoes that slim down your bottom half

Shoes are definitely an important part of your petite-pear wardrobe :-)

It's a no-brainer that high heels make you look taller and leaner. High heels with a little bit of a poiny toe can impact your body figure - making you look taller, and hips slimmer. Also, the more skin you show on your feet (ex. open toe sandals) the leaner your bottom half (hips and legs) will look.

I also want to suggest you to avoid ankle straps as they can shorten your figure. However, T-straps works with slimming your legs. Shoes similar to your skin tone are great too and really lengthen your legs.

Hope this helps and I wish you luck on updating your wardrobe for your bootyliscious body shape!
