How to Buy a Pencil Skirt

Secure the basics

I highly recommend you to secure at least one black pencil skirt. Tailored and preferably at knee-length or above if you're petite. But if you're planning on wearing it for parties then by all means, go shorter ;-) Just make sure it doesn't get any shorter than the tip of your middle fingers when standing up straight with your arms hanging from each side.

The skirt should be simple with minimal details to blend with the rest of your wardrobe.

After securing the skirt in black, build your skirt drawer with solid neutrals such as dark navy blue, charcoal to mid-grey, dark browns and greens.

For warmer months and for a fresh spring look - go for sweet and light colors like white, cream, beige, light pink and light blue. I have one in white with light blue vertical stripes. It's one of my favorite skirts :-)

Add some visual interest (or if you're just feeling frisky) - with prints. Examples are florals, polkadots and stripes.
Need something a little eye catching for a party event? - then why don't you try a skirt with shine, or details such as zippers, tiers or sequins? Experiment with leopard print as well.

Be careful with details

Now speaking of prints and details - choose a skirt interest with care. Understand your body shape and size and what shapes work well with it.

For example, a high waist skirt can shorten your torso. Textures and shine can emphasize your curves. And the list goes on.

Choose the right length

The best length hits you at the knee or shorter. Anything longer can overpower your body figure and make you look shorter. Keep this in mind if you're Petite.

If you're an Apple body shape you may need to opt for a longer skirt, but if you're a petite Apple I recommend raising your height with high heels.

If an occasion or setting requires you to wear something longer - add an extra inch to your heels to counter the frumpy effect. This is a must if you decide to wear a mid-calf skirt. Also make sure that the skirt is snug around the hips and the upper thighs to maintain a streamline silhouette.
