I Have High Hips And I Dont Know What To Wear

by Kelsey
(USA)

Is there anything you can do to lower your hips? I have high hips. The top of my hips is about an inch over my belly button.

I'm 5'3"/5'4" extremely athletic, and I weigh around 110lbs-114lbs just depending on the day, nothing seems to really fit quite right I feel larger in form fitting shirts because of my hips.

I know I'm not fat because there is nothing on my hips but I don't know what to wear.

I do have a little bit of high hips myself and the best styling strategy to lower your hips would be to downplay them and focus on elongating your torso to bring your high hips lower. Another trick is to wear clothes that skim over your high hips to minimize them.

Here is a general guideline on what clothes you should wear to lower your hips:

Choose mid-rise and high-waist instead of low-rise.
This disguises the uneven graduation by skimming over the 'scoop' between your lower and high hip.

Opt for pants, jeans, skirts and dresses that flare
Pants and jeans that have a straight leg, bootcut, flare leg or wide leg are a must because the shape of the hem detract the eye from your hips and make your figure look more streamlined. A-line skirts and dresses (*not* tapered) also give the same effect. Although skinny legs are quite popular these days, they tend to make hips and thighs look bigger. You can counter this effect by accentuating your top, but this tends to enhance your athletic body and is not the best fashion strategy if you're self-conscious about it.

By the way, do you mean you have an athletic body with little waist definition or athletic as in shapely-wide shoulders?

Tops that streamline your figure
Examples are hip-length cardigans, empire waist tops, slightly loose tunic tops and shirts. Dark colored tops worn untucked is also an excellent way to lower your hips and make your torso look longer. I usually wear a wrap cardigan (without any buttons) or a hip-length cardigan unbuttoned to hide my high hips (it tricks people into thinking that there is a trim waist/hip hiding in there).

I would also suggest that you avoid wearing a hip-length light colored top with dark bottom because of the high color contrast. Usually, the area your top falls on (which is your hips) will be highlighted. However you can always streamline your look by adding a vest or sweater that 'connects' with the dark colored bottom and streamlines your body.

Dress monochromatically
This is a fool-proof way to elongate your torso and lower your high hips, as well as make your figure look overally longer. Either wear a dark-colored top and a pair of dark wash jeans, accessorize your outfit according to your personal taste. Or wear a light blue top with light wash jeans or nude/white pants.

I hope I gave some sense of direction in what clothes to focus on how to style your outfits!
