I Dress Conservative: How Can I Update My Look from Scratch?

Too conservative

What basic pieces should I start with?

You have a lovely smile! And I believe you can bring out the best in your appearance by updating your look.

To do a cost-effective makeover I suggest you add some color in your style and try basic clothes with a more fitted, chic cut. Like for example that turtleneck sweater you're wearing -- it looks shapeless and baggy, plus the simple chain gold necklace make the whole outfit look conservative. Swapping the necklace with a bolder, trendy one alone can really lift up your look.

I am glad you've decided to do something about it! There are so many ways to bring out the beauty in you! How and with what, you ask?

Let me give you a couple of tips:

Without knowing the details (your body shape, age, taste and preferance, etc.) I am only able to give you some general advice.

Mini notebook icon Buy clothes that fit right

Have you checked the wardrobe essentials-section? There you can find a complete list of all of the basic pieces you need to start updating your look and closet. When buying the basic pieces remember to buy ones with a great fit to look more pulled together. It shouldn't look too baggy nor clingey. The best way to find your perfect fit is to measure your body. I advise you to make this your first step to make over your style as fit is crucial to looking your best and to avoid looking like a potato sack.

Secure:

- Plenty of basic, solid-colored (black, white, gray) tees, tops and sweaters. Tees in purple, blue, reds and pinks are also nice to have your closet but make sure they are solid-colored
- A pair of wide leg jeans or pants
- Black pencil or A-line skirt depending on your body shape. The skirt should be knee-length. Mid calf can make you look shorter, while ankle length looks outdated (unless it's flowy)
- A pair of brown knee high leather boots
- A sophisticated-looking leather hobo bag.

You can find more suggestions in the wardrobe essentials-section.

Mini notebook icon Inject some color

The next step in your journey to updating your look is to implement lively colors (like purple, reds, yellow, creams & white, greens, etc.) in your outfits. This alone can take your appearance to a whole new level, as colors are known to affect you and other people around you on a physical and emotional level. With the right colors you can enhance your natural colorings and really feel good about yourself! To make sure you pick the right colors, please take a seasonal color analysis or if that's too much a gold or silver color analysis will do just fine.

In this way you'll know what color of earrings, scarf, necklace, makeup and hair dye you should buy.

When updating your look I think you could start with wearing a basic (but great fitting) tee or sweater with an eye-popping necklace or scarf in a color that flatters your complexion.

Mini notebook icon Add an unexpected, trendy twist to your outfit

You can start by adding a belt around your waist or slung low around your hips (if you're older than 40) a long sweater or tunic shirt. Or create layers by combining a basic wrap vest with a dress or sweater.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,

That's terrific

Wow, that's great! Sounds like a classy and stylish outfit, perfect for your body shape. Wide and flare leg can really balance out your apple/inverted triangle shape :-) you didn't even need my advice ;-)

Thank You(s)

I really appreciate your advice. By the way I am an apple body that has taken on a spin (3x a week) and aerobics class (2x a week)and notice that my body is beginning to take on a triangle shape. Yesterday I wore wide leg jeans, a wide brown belt with a basic white shirt, and brown knee high boots. I felt great; got 2 lunch dates; and had more fun than I've had in a long time. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
