gold. These have a less chance of tarnishing compared to 8 dollar plated hoop earrings.
What size should you choose?
If you want something cute and a bit discreet then go for smaller and thinner hoop earrings.
The classic "standard" size is 1 1/2 - 2 inches and give a timeless but trendy look.
But if you want to create a more dramatic fashion statement try thicker or/and larger hoops

appropriate for both casual and semi-formal occasions. Not to mention practical. No need

However, larger hoops are suitable for casual events and project a more trendier look.
 Note: Large hoops look good on wide and round faces as they give the impression of a smaller face.
