Denim vests are casual, cool and versatile. What you should love about them is how to can instantly add some edge to any garment you have in your closet - no matter how classy or girly the outfit is!

You can find these casual vests in various styles - from the oversized to tiny cropped style, to different embellishments and hip denim washes. With me, I prefer mine solid with a subtle fade in a medium blue shade - it's versatile and works best with the rest of my wardrobe - from my pretty floral dresses to tailored dress shorts.

It's not a fashion taboo today as it was 10 years ago! Denim-on-denim is a cool way to create a strong fashion statement and look on-trend. The trick to pulling off this look is to off-set the country costume vibe by adding modern texture and interest.

This is how you do it:

Start with with trendy accessories such as a long pendant necklace, scarf, belt, chic bracelet or trendy handbag
Another trick is to wear different shades of denim - for example, dark blue vest with light to medium blue bottom
I also like seeing gals breaking up their denim-on-denim oufit with a basic tee or a cute floral top.

Chic ways to style it

One of the stylish ways to wear it is to mix various clothing styles in one. You'll also stretch your personal style envelope this way as well. For example, if your clothing style is Classic - wear the denim vest with a sleek tunic shirt dress - or a pair of tailored shorts and white dress shirt!

Also think texture, texture, texture! Pair the vest with wool knits, leather, ruffles, prints and lace! Not everything in one outfit, of course.

Speaking of wearing different styles in one - pair the cool-and-casual vest with a pretty piece - something that is opposite from the edgy vibe it gives. Like for example high heels or a floral print dress.

I wish I could say that the jeans vest is flattering on all body shapes - but the thing with jeans vests is that the material tends to be stiff, which accentuates wide shoulders - making a top-heavy body shape look cone-like and wider on top. Of course, it depends on how you wear it.

So if you have an Inverted Triangle or Apple body shape - or you have a prominent bust, then you need to pair the vest with a garment that creates curves around the hips. But this also requires you to wear a slightly fitted or shrunken vest to avoid looking clunky from top to toe.
